THE HISTORY OF FOUR SQUARE
Four Square was founded in New Zealand soon after the end of the first
world war, by Mr. J. Heaton Barker in 1923, and we believe the
Independent Four Square operator of today truly owes a debt of gratitude
to those men whose courage and foresight brought the Four Square
Organisation into being and fostered the principles for which it stands.
Four Square came to Australia in 1956, and was formed in South Australia
by the Associated Wholesalers Warehouse.
Queensland was the next State to incorporate the Four Square image, and
in 1957 a small group of Independents commenced buying together and
dividing the order among themselves to obtain the best buying price for
their stock. From this very small beginning Four Square has progressed
in Queensland to it’s present strength, and Four Square Stores (Qld) Ltd
is now a strong Independent Group, under the watchful eye of a full-time
CEO and board of directors who are all active operating retailers.
